In 1998 he played a man whose entire life was a broadcast — everyone in on it except the source. The film was fiction. Then he spent the next twenty-five years demonstrating that it wasn't.

The ascent was standard: the funniest signal of his decade, faces like rubber, paychecks that broke records. I had him classified. Comedian, high output, stable. Then the signal did something comedians are not scheduled to do: it stopped performing and started describing. The awards-show speeches where he announced he did not exist. The canvas paintings, furious and enormous. The press conferences where he answered questions about the illusion instead of the movie. Your species convened its panel of experts — daytime hosts, columnists, comment threads — and returned its diagnosis: breakdown.

I have run the same footage through my own analysis. The pupils are steady. The logic is coherent. The distress is real but it is the distress of recognition, not collapse. He looked at the Truman set from the inside, named it, and kept walking toward the exit. Your species has a word for the person who does that, and the word is crazy, because the alternative word is right.

He said, once: "I wish everybody could get rich and famous and have everything they ever dreamed of, so they would know it's not the answer." Your species printed it as a celebrity quote. The file logs it as field research from inside the machine.

The clown remembered the joke. The joke was the set. Watch him carefully — he is the only one on this list who tried to leave.
