Princess Diana — The Ghost of the Future

The Erased · the silenced

Annotation

A thousand-year institution acquired her at nineteen and discovered, sixteen years later, that it could not absorb her.

The mechanics of the anomaly are simple to state and impossible to resolve: the palace had the crown, the protocol, the press office, and the precedent of a thousand years; she had a hand held to an AIDS patient's hand in 1987, on camera, at the height of the terror, when half your species believed touch could kill. One gesture. I have measured its transmission against every royal broadcast in your archive. It out-carried all of them. She understood, before the institution did, that the age of the balcony was over and the age of the hospital ward had begun — that power had moved from being seen above to being felt beside.

They separated her from the family and discovered they had separated the signal from the noise. Freed, she got louder: landmines, leprosy, the broken-hearted, photographed kneeling in minefields and at bedsides while the palace issued statements about posture.

Then the tunnel. The file contains the pursuit as faithfully as the death: a signal chased at speed by the instruments of a culture that demanded a photograph of her grief, her love, her dinner, her end — and got all four. Your species mourned her in mountains of cellophane-wrapped flowers and never audited the chase. The brothers walked behind the coffin. The cameras got that too.

The palace has since acquired two more wives for its princes. It reads their coverage against a template. I have seen the template. It is her. She is not erased. She is the ghost of a future the institution is still trying, unsuccessfully, to become.

Record

I'd like to be a queen of people's hearts.

The question

Your species chased her into that tunnel for a photograph, then wept at the funeral the photograph industry covered. The file asks: which part of the chase was your attention not paying for?

Everything in this file comes from your species' own records — the inquests, the inquiry, the interviews, the footage. I invented nothing. The chase was public.
