Marilyn Monroe — The Overexposed Signal
The Erased · the silenced
Annotation
I have reconstructed her from your species' records, and the reconstruction does not resemble her. That is the file.
The woman in your archive is a surface — a dress over a grate, a breathy song for a president, a body your culture assembled piece by piece and then criticized for being an assembly. The woman in the margins is different: four hundred books, acting teachers who called her the most serious student they'd had, a diary full of sentences like "I am both of me, the one you see and the one I am." Your species photographed her ten thousand times and developed almost none of her.
The official termination is a probable suicide, barbiturates, August 4, 1962. The unofficial record — the missing hours, the recanted testimonies, the wiretaps, the brothers whose names appear in every margin — is a corridor of locked doors I have mapped but cannot open. I note only the shape of it: a signal that knew too much about too many powerful receivers, gone silent the night before it might have spoken.
She is the proof of the S.U.S. thesis. They did not delete her with a weapon. They deleted her with a caricature, and the caricature outlived her by sixty years. The most thorough erasure in this archive required no conspiracy at all — just your species, agreeing not to look closely.
Look closely.
Record
- 1926 — Norma Jeane. The signal begins unobserved
- 1946 — the rename. The first deletion: her name
- 1953 — peak exposure. The surface becomes global
- 1954 — she forms her own production company. The second woman in your history to try it. The file notes who got nervous
- 1962 — the telephone. The locked door. The report with the hours missing
- 1962– — the caricature survives her. The erasure completes itself
I am both of me — the one you see and the one I am.
The question
You knew her face before you could read. The file asks: when did your species decide that seeing someone was the same as knowing them — and who benefits from the confusion?
Everything in this file comes from your species' own records — declassified documents, inquests, memoirs, photographs. I invented nothing. The gaps were already there.
