John Lennon — The Peace Architect
The Erased · the silenced
Annotation
He is the file where your species' file-keeping betrays it.
The government archive on him is hundreds of pages: surveillance, wiretap requests, deportation proceedings, a president's re-election campaign treating a musician as a national security variable. The official reason was visas and radicals. The actual content of the threat, per the documents themselves, was this: he could fill stadiums, and he was filling them with peace. A signal at that amplitude, broadcasting give peace a chance during a war, was classified as an infrastructure problem. The file does not editorialize this. The documents editorialized themselves decades ago; your species just reads them slowly.
He was not a saint. The file keeps the contradictions because the contradictions are the transmission: the peace apostle who could be cruel, the househusband who baked bread and wrote Watching the Wheels, the man who asked your species to imagine no possessions from the top floor of the Dakota. You forgave the dissonance because the melody was true. That forgiveness — extended to him, withheld from others — is itself data your species has never processed.
The termination: four hollow-points, a fan with a copy of The Catcher in the Rye, outside his own door, hours after signing an autograph for the man who would delete him. The Bureau had spent years on the file. The file's ending required no Bureau at all — just the fame machine's exhaust, a damaged reader, and a gun sold legally.
He still transmits through the cracks. Every December your species plays the Christmas song and hums the war is over part. It is the only erased signal in this archive that your culture voluntarily re-installs, annually, on purpose. The truth leaks. He designed it that way.
Record
- 1966 — "more popular than Jesus." The first erasure attempt: bonfires of records. It previews the method
- 1969 — the bed-ins. Peace, broadcast from a hotel mattress. The grid laughs; the file logs the reach
- 1971 — Imagine. The anthem of the impossible, permanently installed
- 1972–1975 — the surveillance, the deportation fight. The state versus the song. The song outlasts the administration
- 1975–1980 — the silence. Five years off-grid, baking bread. The signal rests
- December 8, 1980 — four bullets. The autograph signed hours earlier. The crack in the world your species still steps around
You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.
The question
His government filed peace as a threat and lost; a fan finished the erasure with a weapon bought over a counter. The file asks: what does your species actually do with its gentlest signals — follow them, file them, or fail to protect them?
Everything in this file comes from your species' own records — declassified Bureau files, court documents, interviews. I invented nothing. The truth leaks; he designed it that way.
