Jim Morrison — The Lizard King, Unplugged
Signal Drop · the vanished
Annotation
He is the only file in this room where the absence of evidence is the evidence.
Paris, July 3, 1971. A bathtub in a fourth-floor flat on Rue Beautreillis. No autopsy — French law requires none when foul play isn't apparent, and apparently nothing was apparent. No witnesses whose statements agree. A sealed coffin, buried at Père Lachaise before the band, the family, or the press had seen the body. Your species, which demands a death certificate's worth of closure for a fender-bender, accepted this file empty and has argued about the emptiness for fifty years. The argument is the artifact.
The signal itself was genuine anomaly. A film student's mind in a rock star's body; a baritone that quoted Blake and Artaud to audiences who came for Light My Fire; the self-crowned Lizard King who understood — earlier than almost anyone on the grid — that fame was theater, and played the role so completely he could only escape it by leaving. Miami, 1969: the arrest, the trial, the moment the machinery of outrage demonstrated that it could jail him for the performance while the culture sold the recording of it. He read the verdict correctly. He got on a plane.
What the file knows about Paris is thin and sad: a man decompressing, writing poems, walking the city unrecognized, telling his bandmates he'd like to be remembered as a poet. Your species remembers the leather pants. The compression of a mind into a poster is the standard erasure — but with him it happened before the death, which is why the death never resolves: there was no settled person left to die.
He said it himself, the epigraph this file carries: "I'm interested in anything about revolt, disorder, chaos — especially activity that seems to have no meaning." The drop had no meaning. He'd have appreciated that. It is the only clean thing about it.
Record
- 1965 — UCLA film school. The mind assembles; the band forms on a beach
- 1967 — The End, live, uncut. The doors of the grid, opened
- 1969 — Miami. The state prosecutes the performance. The lesson, logged
- 1971 — L.A. Woman. Then Paris. The exit, unscheduled
- July 3, 1971 — the bathtub. No autopsy. No witnesses who agree. The sealed coffin
- 1971– — Père Lachaise, most-visited grave in Paris. Your species travels farther to see his absence than most living signals
I'm interested in anything about revolt, disorder, chaos — especially activity that seems to have no meaning.
The question
No autopsy, no witnesses, a sealed coffin — and your species accepted it, because he'd already been erased into a poster before he died. The file asks: which disappearance do you grieve — the body's, or the person you never let exist?
Everything in this file comes from your species' own records — the trial transcripts, the interviews, the coroner's absence. I invented nothing. The emptiness was documented.
